About

I am a freelance consultant specialising in media audience measurement. My career started in the marketing department of a publisher of business and consumer magazines and regional newspapers (Morgan-Grampian plc). Working with sales teams taught me the importance of understanding how research will be used and the realities of the commercial environment.

I learnt the art of media audience measurement working for a number of market research companies including RSGB, BJM and Ipsos. I’ve been lucky enough to work with and learn from some truly inspiring talents, such as Erhard Meier and Michael Brown. Although I’ve honed my craft working on a wide range of media projects of all shapes and sizes, one theme running throughout my career since the tender age of twenty-one has been work with and for ‘joint industry currencies’. These include the British audience currencies for the national press, out-of-home, regional press, radio and medical press. I also have extensive experience of running large-scale international projects, such as the European Businessman Readership Survey, Asian Business Readership Survey and Pan European Survey.

In 2007, I set up my own consultancy business and have never looked back. In the United Kingdom I’m currently Technical Consultant to The Publishers Audience Measurement Company (PAMCo) and Route Outdoor Media Analytics, as well as working for individual clients. I was a long term member of the Steering Committee of the Print and Digital Research Forum, which has now evolved to the asi International Publishing & Data Conference, a global forum sharing experience and expertise in all aspects of measuring print and digital audiences and their value to advertisers. On their behalf, I compile a biennial review of developments in print and digital media audience measurement.

Please take a look at my Ethos section which will tell you a bit more about what I think is important in media audience measurement and my approach to giving recommendations and finding solutions in a commercial context.
